The St. Lawrence County Traffic Safety Program and St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office are reminding residents about the New York State seat belt law change that goes into effect Nov. 1.
According to the new law it is now mandatory for back-seat passengers to buckle up in addition to those in the front seats as well as children under the age of 8 who should be in a properly fitted car seat.
Passengers over 16 years of age who do not buckle up in the backseat can be ticketed $50 along with the driver. The new law includes people who are riding in the backseat of a taxi, Lyft, or Uber to be buckled as well.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 68 percent of rear-seat passengers buckle up in states where they are not required to, compared to 81 percent in states that require belts for all passengers.
