POTSDAM -- A new orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist is practicing in Potsdam.
Dr. Robert S. Cummings is practicing in Potsdam at the Cheel Medical Center with privileges at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.
He began seeing patients July 15.
Cummings diagnoses and treats illnesses and injuries affecting the bones, muscles, and joints (musculoskeletal system), including assessing and treating “for optimal performance in sports and at work,” St. Lawrence Health System said in a prepared statement.
Cummings performs surgery including arthroscopy, partial or total joint replacement, repair of muscle and tendon tears, dislocations, and other injuries, broken bone and joint repair, and ligament reconstruction. He also performs muscle and bone biopsies.
He received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and completed a surgical internship at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, Mass. His orthopedic research residency was at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, his orthopedic residency at Allegheny University Hospitals in Philadelphia, and a sports medicine fellowship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He joins the SLHS medical staff most recently from Dartmouth Hitchcock Clinic in Concord, N.H.
Cummings has been team physician for the Lowell Lockmonsters, an AHL professional hockey team based in Lowell, Mass., and was a physician for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He has published several peer-reviewed studies on winter sports injuries. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.
