Nearly 500 early election voters wait in long line to cast ballots in Canton this weekend

CANTON -- Long lines of voters waiting to cast their ballots early snaked around the first and second floors of the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections office Saturday and Sunday.A total of 472 county voters turned out Saturday and 418 voters Sunday, including affidavits. On Saturday, the line extending outside the buiding at times.
This is the first year that New York State has allowed for early voting in a presidential election.
They waited in line for up to 90 minutes, with facial masks and social distancing guidelines in place.
"Even with the long waits, everyone was pretty happy, and there weren't too many complaints," said Gordon Ward, Deputy Commissioner of St. Lawrence County Elections.
"A lot of people were excited to vote," he said.
The early voting period continues through Sun., Nov. 1 at the Human Services Building, 80 St Hwy 310.
Hours of operation are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Monday, Thursday and Friday; 9 a.m.-8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
