Meeting set for Jan. 22 to discuss shortage of drivers of veterans for DAV Volunteer Transportation Network

POTSDAM -- A shortage of drivers for veterans through the DAV Volunteer Transportation Network will be the subject of a meeting Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Robert J. Freego AmVets Post 282 on US Hwy 11.

“The purpose of the meeting is to figure out a few things,” said Transportation Network Hospital Service Coordinator Edwards Rogers.

He wants to discuss how to spread the word about the DAV Volunteer Transportation Network in the North Country, how to best create a buzz that the need for volunteer drivers is dire, share the statistics of veterans living in St. Lawrence County and numbers of riders using the program now, and coordinate the best method of making sure that no veterans are being left behind.

The network of volunteer drivers makes sure that veterans get where they need to be, especially medical appointments. There appointments can be all over the North Country and down to Syracuse. Many veterans are disabled and need help getting there.

“Between both areas (Potsdam and Ogdensburg), there are less than 10 drivers and this shortage is leaving many veterans without needed transportation to their medical appointments,” Rogers said.

The Massena area coordinator can help from time to time, but “they are also short drivers and typically kept busy with the clinic right there.”
