North Country This Week
MASSENA — The North Country will soon see a native son in Beijing as Jonny Gustafson of Massena competes in the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Gustafson was officially nominated for the men’s singles luge event in Beijing as Team USA’s number two slider in the event.
Gustafson, a 2015 graduate of Massena Central School, began competing in luge during the 2010-2011 season, progressing through the ranks quickly.
He made his World Cup debut during the 2016-17 season in Winterberg, Germany, according to his profile on teamusa.org.
His best finishes to date on the World Cup circuit are matching seventh place finishes at Igls, Austria in 2018 and Lake Placid in 2019.
The World Cup circuit is the top circuit for bobsled, luge and skeleton athletes, with only the best of the best being selected for Olympic competition.
Team USA athletes were able to only compete in the second half of the 2020 season due to COVID, according to teamusa.com.
Gustafson joins 2018 Olympic silver medalist Chris Mazder and Olympic veteran Tucker West in representing Team USA.
The 2022 Olympics begin Feb. 4, with the first men’s singles luge run beginning soon after on Feb. 5.
