MASSENA -- The Board of Trustees took no action on a local woman’s proposal to allow chickens in the village, but the Code Committee may revisit the idea in the future.

Jennifer Lashomb addressed the board during the public comment portion of their Tuesday, Sept. 15 meeting.

“I think it would actually be something that really benefits a good majority of people, especially in this time we’re in now,” Lashomb said of the proposal she sent to the board. “Nobody can say what’s going to happen in the next few months. Keeping a small flock of chickens is harmless, if done properly.”

She said it would allow people who raise the birds to provide fresh eggs to themselves and their neighbors. Her interest comes from “protein source for a child with food allergies and a restricted diet.”

“We’re going to leave this at the Code Committee level at this point. If there’s interest on the board, they’ll bring it back to us,” Mayor Tim Currier said.

“It would certainly add a burden. I’m not sure if we should move forward with it immediately,” said Deputy Mayor Matt Lebire, who is on the Code Committee with Trustee Francis Carvel. “We’ll keep it on our list of topics and revisit it.”
