BRIGHTON -- A Massena man was killed when his vehicle went off the highway in Brighton which may have resulted from his suffering a medical emergency prior to the Tuesday evening crash, according to state police.
Alson J. Novak, 75, was traveling north on state Route 30 near Paul Smith's College when his vehicle ran off the east shoulder of the roadway, striking guide wires.
Witnesses at the scene removed Novak from his vehicle and began CPR until Saranac Lake EMS arrived and took over. Their efforts were unsuccessful, troopers said.
Novak was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Ronald B. Keough at 7:52 p.m. Coroner Keough removed the body from the scene to the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake.
State troopers say their preliminary investigation reveals that Novak may have suffered a medical emergency leading to the crash.
An autopsy will be performed at a later date, police said.
Paul Smith's Gabriels Fire Department, Duane Fire Department, and Saranac Lake Emergency Medical Services all assisted at the scene.
