MASSENA – A Massena man was arrested for bail jumping and other charges Sunday after a four-year-old blurted out to state police that he was hiding in the attic.
John A. Colby, 30, 12 Stearns St., was charged at 7:30 a.m. with third degree bail jumping, second degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, police said.
At first when police arrived, Colby’s live-in girlfriend, Jessica L. Smith, 27, told troopers she did not know where Colby was. But according to police reports, their four-year-old daughter chimed in and said “Daddy is scared and hiding in the attic.”
Smith “actively resisted” when troopers went into the attic to take Colby into custody and was also arrested for second degree obstructing governmental administraiton, police said. However, Colby told NorthCountryNow.com Smith "did not resist the cops."
Troopers originally responded to Colby’s residence to serve two bench warrants issued by the Stockholm and Norfolk town courts.
Colby was arraigned in by Norfolk Town Justice Grubee and sent to St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1,655 cash bail. He is to reappear in Norfolk Court on Jan. 25, police said.
