MASSENA --- The Massena Elks Lodge is organizing a “Be the Match” bone marrow registry drive.
The event will takes place Saturday, April 28 at the Massena Elks Lodge, 20 Bowers St., from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. People between the ages of 18 and 60 willing to donate to patients in need can add themselves to the registry of potential bone marrow donors.
The registry allows patients in need to get bone marrow matched to them.
Be the Match reports that, as of now, about 12,000 people a year go to them looking for a match, and about 6,000 people find one.
Aside from registering your marrow, you can help with donation. It costs about $100 to place each marrow donor in the registry.
The Elks are also looking for items donated by businesses, organizations and individuals that they can auction off to support the drive.
To donate or for more information, call Jamie Sharpe, Massena Elks’ Be the Match coordinator, at 705-4805, or Michael Garbin of the Be the Match Foundation at (585) 472-4715.
