MASSENA -- The U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Massena Flotilla is reminding boaters that most boating accidents are preventable.

Wearing a life jacket (PFD – personal flotation device) is one of the most important factors in preventing tragedies while boating. New York State law requires specific PFDs for certain vessels. The New York State Boaters Guide contains complete and additional information and requirements.

Boaters are also reminded that there are penalties and fines in New York for boating while intoxicated or impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Boaters should let someone on land know their locations and times.

Watercraft are all required to have certain equipment.

Remember to follow all the safety rules regarding the Corona Virus pandemic.

Information regarding boating safety classes, vessel safety checks, flotillas and other items is available through the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary website (www.cgaux.org). The local U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotillas can also supply any needed information.
