MASSENA -- The Massena Recreation Commission has opened the Massena Arena on a limited basis.

Currently, the arena is available for individual training for all sports, organized group training drills (camps and clinics), figure skating, public skating, skate and shoot (shinny), parent/tot and senior skating.

COVID-19 guidelines are in place. A maximum number of 30 skaters is allowed for each session, and six feet social distancing must always be adhered.

Not allowed, at this time, are competitive activities (scrimmaging), recreational league games, pick-up games, tournaments and competitive matches requiring travel.

Mike McCabe, Massena Recreation Director, said “Massena Minor Hockey Association (massenaminorhockey.com) and Massena Figure Skating Club (massenafsc.org) registration is ongoing online.”

The Massena Arena will open 15 minutes prior to the scheduled ice time. Anyone arriving earlier than 15 minutes must wait outside and be socially distanced from others.

Parking is only allowed in the front parking lot and the side parking lot closest to the highway.

All skaters and spectators must wear a mask when entering and exiting the building, with no exceptions. Skaters need to be completely dressed, except helmets, gloves and skates, when

entering the arena

All persons entering the building will enter through the front lobby and give the attendant the signed ‘Player and Staff Health Screening Sheet’ or show completed Screening on Phone and receive a temperature check.

Skaters or coaches with any risk factors or illnesses, or with symptoms or signs of illness, should not be in the arena.

Families must provide attendant with accurate contact information in the event of emergency while the player is at the arena, and the designated person must be able to reached if the need arises.

Only one parent/spectator is allowed in the arena at this time.

Skaters will put skates on at a designated area where benches/chairs have been set up and remain at the seat until the zamboni gets off the ice.

Whenever possible, skaters should use the restroom at home prior to leaving for the arena in an effort to limit bathroom use.

No off-ice interaction (socializing, team meetings, dryland activities, etc.) should occur prior to or following the conclusion of practice.

Skaters must remove skates and helmets and put their masks on before leaving the arena within 10 minutes of the end of practice.

The parents or person assigned to pick up skaters must be punctual. Skaters should not have to wait for a ride.

All persons exiting the building will go out the side exit doors. Locker rooms will only be available for coaches and goalies.

Skate sharpening will occur only during weekdays mornings or can be left at arena to be picked up the following day/session.
