Local input needed on surveys for Grasse and Oswegatchie rivers

CANTON -- Opinions are being gathered through two new online surveys designed to gauge interest in and collect ideas for North Country rivers. The surveys, for the Grasse River and Oswegatchie River, are both very brief to encourage maximum participation.

The Village and Town of Canton is leading a cooperative effort among towns, villages, and hamlets from the Town of Russell to the Town of Massena to develop a marketing plan for the Grasse River Blueway. The marketing plan will help attract residents and visitors to the Grasse River corridor for sustainable tourism and recreation that strikes a balance between economic development and preservation of the corridor's open spaces and natural resources.

The survey asks how people think the corridor should be promoted. Respondents can also submit their "hidden gems" of the Grasse River, special places and areas that can help promote the Blueway.

The second survey is also for a multi-municipal effort, this one led by the Town of Canton. This survey focuses on the Oswegatchie River in the towns of Canton, De Kalb and Oswegatchie and villages of Richville, Rensselaer Falls and Heuvelton for Part One of a Local Waterfront Revitalization Program. An approved LWRP reflects community consensus and provides a clear direction for appropriate future development. It establishes a long-term partnership among local governments, community-based organizations, and the State.

The survey asks how respondents use the Oswegatchie River and invites them to contribute to the LWRP “inventory” by identifying must-see spots along the river inside the study area.
