Literacy of Northern NY seeking volunteers

Posted

Literacy of Northern NY is training people who are interested in learning to tutor adults in either basic literacy skills or English as a Second Language.

The training consists of five sessions, held on Tuesday mornings in Canton beginning Sept. 21.

Once tutors are trained, their time commitment for tutoring amounts to three to six hours each week. The scheduling of tutoring sessions is flexible and arranged at the convenience of the tutor and student. Even people who leave the area for weeks at a time are welcome, as they can tutor while they’re here and then take a break when they’re away.

Volunteer tutors are desperately needed. No previous teaching experience is needed.

Once tutors are trained, they have the support of the staff at Literacy of Northern New York. Tutors and students can borrow appropriate materials from libraries throughout the county. Most tutors report that they learn as much from their students as the students learn from them.

Anyone interested can obtain more information by calling the Literacy of Northern NY office at 265-0194 or emailing lvastlaw@hotmail.com.

If you are interested but cannot attend these training sessions, call the number above and ask about future training sessions.
