Keeping remote learners engaged proving difficult task for some St. Lawrence County teachers

CANTON -- Student attendance and participation are issues school officials are tackling as families and students adapt to remote learning.

“What we are experiencing is a real dilemma for our staff,” Burke said.

Teachers are tasked with taking attendance of students who are in person, as well as those learning virtually.

Student attendance is required by the state.

Attendance isn’t just limited to showing up. Students need to be engaged in learning too, Burke said. He said this is an issue he has heard from other local superintendents.

“We have those students who are already on the cusp, and trying to keep those folks engaged, trying to get them to attend is becoming more and more problematic,” Burke said. He added that this speaks volumes to the importance of in-person instruction.

One board member asked if a hybrid or remote middle/high school student was failing, if the district could mandate them to attend in-person learning for four days.

However, the governor has given parents the option to choose whether or not to send the child to school for in-person instruction.

Burke said that when teachers are noticing a student struggling, they are reaching out to students and families and encourage them to engage better, or to come back to campus.

Parents have until Oct. 15 to decide whether or not to make changes to in-person versus remote learning plans for their children.
