Ice storm warning issued for St. Lawrence County 7 p.m. through 1 p.m. Sunday with power outages expected

An ice storm warning is in effect for St. Lawrence County from 7 p.m. tonight through 1 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

Heavy freezing rain with significant icing is expected, the service says. Total ice accumulations of a half inch to an inch are expected.

Rain will change to freezing rain tonight and continue into Sunday morning with precipitation being moderate to heavy at times, NWS says.

Power outages and tree damaged are expected due to the ice, forecasters say. Travel could be very difficult during this time period.

Additionally, winds with be 25 to 35 miles per hour Sunday afternoon which will have an impact on any ice-laden trees and power lines, NWS says.

Travel should be restricted to emergencies only and people should prepare for extended power outages.

The forecast through next Friday is as follows:

Freezing rain before 9am, then snow showers and sleet likely between 9am and 10am, then snow showers likely after 10am. High near 29. Northeast wind 5 to 13 mph becoming southwest in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New ice accumulation of 0.1 to 0.2 of an inch possible. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Partly cloudy, with a low around 12. Northwest wind 5 to 7 mph becoming light and variable.

Monday

Increasing clouds, with a high near 26. Northeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the morning.

Tuesday

Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Calm wind becoming east 5 to 7 mph in the morning.

A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 25. East wind around 6 mph becoming west after midnight.
