GOUVERNEUR — A Gouverneur man was charged with driving while intoxicated after fleeing a traffic stop on a UTV, according to village police.
Leland A. Whitton, 42, was charged with unlawful fleeing a police officer, speed in zone, operating without insurance, unregistered motor vehicle, unlawful operation on highway (ATV), operating while ability impaired by alcohol, officers said.
He was observed in a UTV on Grove Street Aug. 20 and charged at 12:35 a.m., police said
Whitton reportedly fled in the UTV after emergency lights were activated. He drove 60 mph in a 30 mph zone and 85 mph in a 45 mph zone, before eventually stopping on Van Buren Road.
He was determined to be impaired and a breath test revealed the defendant’s blood-alcohol content (BAC) to be .14%.
He was issued traffic tickets with a Gouverneur Town court date and released to a third party.
