GOUVERNEUR -- A St. Lawrence County IDA water line project in Gouverneur was awarded $200,000 for the construction of a second water main in the village.
The funding was approved Wednesday today at a meeting of the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC).
Low water pressure has hampered Kinney Drugs, based in Gouverneur, from getting receive insurance on their property. That could have led to them closing the facility. due to the lack adequate water infrastructure, the announcement from the governor’s office said.
This funding will support commercial and residential investment, and is vital to ensuring that the Kinney Drugs distribution center remains open in the village. The economic impact of this grant program extends beyond St. Lawrence County with 300 jobs to be retained, the announcement said.
The Northern Border Regional Commission was created by Congress in 2008 to help address the community and economic development needs of the most severely distressed portions of the Northeastern United States.
