LOUISVILLE — A GoFundMe has been launched following a fire at Java's Veterinary Center, 10035 State Highway 56.

“Many people were shocked at the heartbreaking news that the Java Veterinary Center in the Massena area burned to the ground this past week, and Dr. Perez lost not only his practice, but his home and everything he owns,” said Janet St. Pierre, who brought her pets to the shelter.

The fire took place around 3 a.m. on Oct. 28.

Firefighters from Louisville, Massena, Norfolk, Madrid, Waddington, West Stockholm, Brasher-Winthrop, as well as Akwesasne Vol Fire Department and Potsdam Volunteer Fire Department.

The Lisbon Volunteer Fire Department, Helena Volunteer Fire Department, North Lawrence Fire Department and Norwood Volunteer Fire Department.

The building is considered a total loss.

The clinic was owned by Dr. Wilfredo Perez.

“We are asking for any help that can be given to rebuild the clinic that has helped so many pets over the years and families during their time of need,” Perez said in a statement on GoFundMe. “We employ many citizens from our community and only wish from the bottom of our hearts to continue serving those in need of our care.

Donate for this much needed cause to help us continue to serve the community and my pet patients who we hold so dearly to our hearts and have always served from a place of love.”

The fire, coupled with multiple veterinary clinic closures in recent years, leaves many people looking for a new clinic to take their pet.

“I am grateful to hear that Dr. Perez will rebuild the practice and hope our community is able to help make it happen,” St. Pierre said. “It is a very scary feeling to be without a veterinarian. The rebuilding of Java Veterinary Center is essential for those of us that live in St. Lawrence County.”

The GoFundMe has raised $34,918 toward its $100,000 goal.
