Giving Tree applications due Nov. 5 for Canton, H-D, E-K students; donations being accepted

The Church and Community Giving Tree program is again hoping to make Christmas brighter for local families, but with changes due to the pandemic.

Children in Canton, Hermon, Clare, DeKalb, Russell, and Rensselaer (village), who attend (or will attend) Canton Central, Hermon-DeKalb, or Edwards-Knox schools may qualify for the program.

Applications can be obtained at the Church and Community Office/Second Chance Thrift Shop, 30 Court Street, Canton, and returned by Nov. 5.

The pandemic has brought many changes to the program. In past years community members have taken tags from local businesses and churches to purchase gifts and clothes for children in need.

This year Giving Tree organizers will provide vouchers, instead, for parents to purchase the toys, gifts, and clothes. They will also get new PJs and a hand-knit hat, and families will receive a food voucher from Save-A-Lot.

“There’s a lot of need out there in our community, and many generous people are donating money to allow us to purchase the vouchers so local children will have a happier holiday,” says Co-Director Fran Bailey.

“Right now we’re especially concerned about reaching all the families we can so parents who have lost jobs or have had hours cut back will have vouchers to purchase gifts for their children.”

People can donate by cash or check using the donation envelopes in local businesses and churches. Those who prefer to use PayPal or a credit card can go online to the Church and Community website (https://www.ccpcanton.org) and click on the link to Giving Tree on the home page. Or donors can come into our Second Chance Thrift Shop to drop off their cash or check or to use Square to donate by credit card in person If possible, donations should be made by November 15 in order to get the vouchers out shortly after Thanksgiving.

“It is heartwarming to see the many donations come in,” adds Cheryl Glidden. “Our community is made up of so many caring, thoughtful people who are always there to help others. We are hoping the Giving Tree Program can help in some small way!”
