POTSDAM – Dozens of five- to ten-year-olds from eight Girl Scout troops from Potsdam, Colton, Pierrepont, Parishville, Madrid, Norfolk, Norwood and Massena recently participated in a hands-on robotics activity at Clarkson University.
Girl Scout leaders Marissa LaCoursiere, a Clarkson School of Engineering graduate student, and Susan Scott, a Clarkson staff member, teamed up with undergraduate students associated with Clarkson's Robotics Living Learning Community and the Northern New York Robotics Institute, directed by Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor James Carroll, to bring this engaging experience to the Brownie and Daisy-level scouts.
The activity, which focused on electrical engineering concepts, involved the design, construction, programming and testing of a robotic alarm clock, based on the book “A Reminder for Emily.”
The book, developed by the Boston Museum of Science's Engineering is Elementary Program, was designed to support K-12 science, technology, engineering and math experiences across the country.
While on campus the girls also toured Clarkson's Student Projects for Engineering Experience and Design (SPEED) Program facilities.
The girls were from Brownie Troop 50031 - Madrid / Waddington, Daisy Troop 50106 - Parishville / Hopkinton, Brownie Troop 50280 - Parishville / Hopkinton, Daisy/Brownie Troop 50105 - Colton / Pierrepont, Brownie Troop 50178 - Massena, Daisy Troop 50216 - Potsdam, Brownie Troop 50240 - Potsdam, Brownie Troop 50173 - Norwood / Norfolk, and Brownie Troop 50321 - Potsdam.
The Clarkson Robotics Living Learning Community Members and other Clarkson student participants were Jose David Parra (student organizer), Amanda Clapper, Teresa Mayforth, Gabby Lashomb, Chris Lane, Zachery Brown, Kyle Krivitsky, Joey Eckert, Buncha Supatpitak, Joshua Dawes, Allan Bille, Jeannie Piekarz and Libby Kamen.
