Free tax preparation to be offered at county-wide Super Saturday Tax Events

To raise awareness and provide the opportunity for low and moderate-income working individuals and families to have their income tax returned prepared free of charge, SeaComm Federal Credit Union in partnership with Cornell Cooperative Extension of St. Lawrence County, the Akwesasne Housing Authority, OneWorkSource in Malone and the IRS, is hosting Super Saturday Tax Events.

Free tax preparation sessions are Saturday Jan. 28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Massena Branch, 79 Main St.

A second set of sessions will be held the following Saturday, Feb. 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. at SeaComm’s Canton and Ogdensburg locations.

The earned income tax credit (EITC) is a refundable federal income tax credit for low to moderate-income working individuals and families. To qualify, taxpayers must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if they did not earn enough money to be obligated to file a tax return. Unfortunately, not every eligible taxpayer applies for this credit.

IRS trained volunteers will be on hand to prepare returns for eligible workers. Financial Service Representatives from the credit union will be available to open accounts for people without an account and possibly provide loans for those who need their refunds in a hurry.

Appointments for Super Saturday are required. For appointments or for more information, call 764-0566 or (800) 764-0566. Information is also available on the SeaComm website, www.seacomm.org.
