‘Forward tees’ aim to make shorter golf game a more enjoyable one at SLU course in Canton

CANTON -- The Oliver D Appleton Golf Course at St. Lawrence University hopes to make the game a little easier and more enjoyable with its new Purple Tee Course, with “forward tees” to shorten the game for those who choose to use them.

Anyone can use the 18 forward tees of the Purple Tee Course, ladies, men, juniors, beginners, and highly skilled players, as opposed the what had been the generally accepted use by ladies of the “red tees,” a few yards closer to the hole.

“The idea is to create a shorter golf course so players can hit more greens in regulation, make more birdies and pars, shoot lower scores, and just have more fun playing golf,” said Best Western University Inn Golf Manager Craig Siddon. “We have received great feedback from those who have recently tried them and we hope they attract new golfers, retain our current ones and create a fun experience for anyone who plays golf. We already have a fantastic golf course that has 4 other sets of tees and the Purple tees just give another great option for our members and guests to enjoy their day playing here,” he said.

The purple tees can help with pace of play, and accomplished players can use them to work on their short games. The USGA and the PGA have been promoting the “Tee it Forward” idea since at least 2011.

SLU’s Appleton Purple Tee Course has a USGA course rating, slope and an available scorecard in the pro shop.
