OGDENSBURG — Firefighters saved a Hamilton Street home from being a total loss Thursday morning, according to Ogdensburg Assistant Fire Chief Ray LaRock.
The fire was reported at 11:37 a.m. by a neighbor and firefighters were on scene within two minutes, he said. The home is located very close to the fire station, he added.
The fire at 709 Hamilton St. was caused by extension cords, he said. It was unintentional.
Firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames visible from a corner of the home upon arrival, LaRock said.
An attack line was used through a broken window to provide a “quick cool down” of the blaze, he said.
Once inside firemen were able to contain the fire to the living room area. The blaze reportedly started under a couch.
The damage was estimated at $20,000, $5,000 of which was belongings.
Eight firemen responded with another 7 on standby at the station, LaRock said.
Police and rescue personnel were on scene.
LaRock attributed a quick response, thanks to a neighbor calling it in and the location, with good save.
