CANTON -- A fire at the center of the SUNY Canton campus that apparently started in a science laboratory has been extinguished.
The fire was in Cook Hall, starting as a chemical fire in the lab.
SUNY Canton spokesman Randy Sieminski said that reports that the fire had spread to other buildings were not borne out, but he did not rule out damage to neighboring buildings.
There have been no reports of any injuries, Sieminski said.
The alarm went out at about 11:45 this morning after the fire started in the science lab.
Cook Hall, the attached Faculty Office Building, and other nearby buildings, including Payson Hall, Southworth Library, Wicks Hall and the Miller Campus Center, were all evacuated, not necessarily because of any imminent fire danger, but because "we just didn't want anybody threatened by smoke," Sieminki said.
Sieminski said he though about six fire departments have arrived to help with the emergency.
Investigators will now begin the work of piecing together the actual origin of the fire.
