GOUVERNEUR — Volunteers from the Central and Northern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross are assisting a Gouverneur family after a structure fire on Dec. 17.

According to a Gouverneur Fire Department Facebook post, crews reported to the scene of a reported dwelling fire around 11:08 p.m. and found the house had moderate smoke conditions inside but with no visible flames.

Engine 17’s crew then entered the structure, opened a wall and ceiling area and found the fire, the post states.

Members of the fire department were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area, according to the post.

According to a press release, the Red Cross provided financial assistance to the family for shelter, food and clothing for six adults and two children who are five and 11 years old.

“Volunteers also offered emotional support and comfort kits containing personal care items, as well as stuffed animals for the children. Blankets were also provided,” the release states.

Red Cross officials say they will remain available “to help those affected by the fire as they navigate the road to recovery.”
