GOUVERNEUR -- A fire Wednesday destroyed a barn, but a home as was able to be saved, according to Gouverneur fire officials.

Gouverneur Fire responded to a reported structure fire at 1:27 p.m. at 224 Little Bow Road.

Fire officials said all the animals were out of the barn when they arrived on scene and no injuries were reported.

Engine 17 arrived on scene with heavy fire showing in a barn and radiant heat causing damage to the home, officials said. Crews protected the house and started extinguishing the main fire in the barn. Members were reportedly able to save the house from fire damage.

However, the barn had heavy fire damage with structural failure. An approximately 14' section of the barn was held from damage which held high value specialized items of the owner.

"With one of our tankers being out of service for repairs and only having one tanker members experienced a shortage of water early on in the event," officials said. "We would like to thank the Village of Gouverneur DPW for bringing their VAC truck which holds 1,000 gallons of water until mutual aid tankers could arrive."

Mutual aid was provided by Richville and Oxbow fire departments.
