CANTON -- An electrical issue has pushed back the opening of the Canton Pavilion ice schedule one week to Saturday, Oct. 23.

Canton Recreation Director Meghan Richardson reported that after completing some expected repairs in the mechanical room, an electrical issue surfaced with the chiller during a pre-check before firing up the system.

Richardson said the discovery was significant and besides risking a complete system failure, the problem could have resulted in a catastrophic fire.

“I hated to push our start date as everyone is excited to get the skates back on, but we need to make sure that our system is safe for our community and our staff,” said Richardson.

“Davis Mechanical has been a fantastic company to work with as they are pushing to get us up and running. I have been on the phone daily with the owner and they actually installed our system, to it has been nice to have the Davis crew back on site.”

The recreation department is currently looking to hire Skate Guards who will work before, during and after public skating to ensure all participants have a fun and safe time on the ice.

Applicants must be 16 years old and over, good skating skills, good communication and responsible. Available shifts and Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., and Saturday from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Additional hours may be available during school holidays.
