WADDINGTON — A clean up day was held Saturday, May 13 at the Union Cemetery in Waddington for the upcoming Patriot Marker Ceremony made possible by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation to honor 3 Revolutionary War Soldiers buried there.
Girl Scout Troop 50031 Madrid-Waddington Juniors helped clean the stone of one of these patriots.
Boy Scout Troop 9 from Heuvelton helped clean up brush, raked up fallen limbs and filled in holes with dirt.
The other volunteers cleaned 36 stones, straightened 18 stones, reset the bases of 2 stones completely tipped over and restored a second Patriots stone that was broken in half.
Organizers thanked Gehirg Putney from Putney Tree Service for volunteering his time and equipment to auger the hole for the base for the Patriot Marker and picking up the brush from the event.
The Town of Waddington maintains 5 town owned cemeteries and 4 of them date back to the early 1800’s. While they are mowed and trimmed that doesn't address the stones in disrepair, tree work and overgrown brush or fences in need of repair or replacement. The Waddington Cemetery Committee with help from community members, local businesses and retired and active Alcoa employees through an action grant have made a lot of progress at the Chamberlain Corners Cemetery, the committee said in a press release.
The Patriot Marker Ceremony will be held Saturday, June 3 at 10 a.m. rain or shine.
Everyone is welcome; bring a chair.
For information about the ceremony or helping out at one of the other clean up days call Tracey Putney at 315-261-1305.
