The Democrats have held onto their majority control of the St. Lawrence County Legislature -- just barely.
What had been a legislative body made of 10 Democrats and five Republicans is now down to 8-7.
As expected, Republicans Scott Sutherland and Kevin Acres won in districts seven and eight respectively, because Democrats Laura J. Perry and Tedra Cobb declined to run again and no other Democrats stepped up to run.
But in Potsdam's district 11, where Democrat Charles House did not run again, Republican Daniel Parker won a contest with Democrat Gavin Regan.
However, in District 13 in the Massena-Winthrop area, Democrat Tony Arquiett unseated incumbent Republican Tom Grow.
In a three-way race in Potsdam's District 10, Democrat Jim Bunstone ousted J. Patrick Turbett, 304-207, nonetheless keeping the seat in Democratic hands. Republican Karl Ortmeyer received 213 votes. Turbett was running as an independent after he failed to get on the Democratic ballot after some signature petitions were ruled invalid.
In Canton's District 9 where Democrat Peter FitzRandolph did not run again, but Democrat Stephen Putman came out ahead against Republican John Clark, 812-608.
In District 8, which covers parts of Potsdam, Canton and Madrid, Acres won easily over Conservative Russ FInley, 1,419 to 235. Matthew J. Flynn, who lost the GOP primary in September just four months after graduating from Canton High School, received 264 votes despite having publicly dropped out of the race last month.
