Dekalb community development plan nearing final stages

DEKALB – Creation of a community development plan for the Town of DeKalb is reaching its final stages with discussion and suggestions for the improvement of the draft plan at community meetings Sunday and Tuesday.

A draft report has been prepared based on surveys, community meetings, and conversations with residents. It includes a time line for 29 suggested actions the community could take to plot its direction.

The draft can be read on the town’s website, townofdekalb.org. Residents without Internet access can see printed copies at DeKalb Town Hall, Dale’s Grocery, Dalton’s Deli, and the Hermon-DeKalb Central School office.

All DeKalb residents are asked to participate in the community meetings at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22 at the Richville United Church, and two meetings Tuesday, Jan. 24, at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. in the community rooms of the Sunrise Valley Apartments in DeKalb Junction.

The quality and usefulness of the strategy that has been developed depends heavily on the breadth of representation and participation in its creation, according to Dave Weissbard of C.W. Augustine, a community development consulting firm located in DeKalb Junction, so all area residents are being encouraged to participate.

The DeKalb Town Council, with the aid of a grant from NYS Homes and Community Renewal, engaged C.W. Augustine, Inc., to work with the DeKalb Planning Committee through the process that resulted in a community development strategy to provide a ticket to DeKalb’s future.

The members of the planning committee are Barry Amaral, Linda Batt, Martha Burt, Lee Carvel, Sophie Clinton, Suzann Conklin, Ella Mae Fenlong, John Frary, Bob Hance, Romayne Hartshorn, Mary Huse, Bill Knoble, Jean Merithew, Martha Reynolds, Arnie Roberts, Kathy Schaper, Ginger Thomas and Bryon Thompson.

C.W. Augustine is in its 18th year of offering grant writing , contract administration, and inspection services to communities and organizations in Northern and Central New York.
