POTSDAM – Two documents related to the Department of Environmental Conservation's plan to clean up contaminants at a Superfund site in Potsdam, the metals scrap yard in Potsdam, are available for public view.

DEC has issued a Record of Decision, dated March, can be seen at Potsdam Public Library in the Civic Center on Park Street.

And the Proposed Remedial Action Plan for the site, dated February, is online at http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/remediation_hudson_pdf/645022.pdf.

The Waste Stream Superfund site at 147 Outer Maple St., has been a metals recovery site since the 1950s before becoming the site of Waste Stream Management. Waste Stream has since been sold to Casella Waste Services, which still owns the site but which has moved its operations to West Parishville.

The proposal calls for removing soils and sediments at the 27-acre site and nearby, and consolidating any remaining contamination in one spot and covering it with clean soil, along with other measures.

DEC says site management will continue after the cleanup, with fencing. monitoring “and other institutional and engineering controls will be put in place to insure that the site is secure and human health and the environment are protected.”

Processing scrap metal for salvage led to release of fluids containing volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, metals and polychlorinated bipehnyls, of PCBs, DEC said.
