POTSDAM -- Marking 125 years of tradition and innovation, faculty from SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music will perform an upcoming concert at Steinway Hall in New York City.
Seven accomplished faculty members from The Crane School of Music will perform in the rotunda at Steinway Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 27. Steinway Hall, located at 109 W. 57th St., is in the heart of midtown Manhattan and is the flagship store of Steinway & Sons. Since its opening in 1925, the hall has been a landmark destination for music enthusiasts, piano students and professionals throughout the world.
Performers at the event include Paul Wyse, Eugenia Tsarov and François Germain on piano; Donald George, tenor; Christopher Creviston, saxophone; Julianne Kirk, clarinet, and Carol Lowe, bassoon. All are members of the SUNY Potsdam faculty.
The program of primarily French and Russian music will feature Ravel's "Rhapsodie Espagnol" for piano with four hands; the Ravel Sonatine in a transcription for saxophone and piano; "May" and "December" from Tchaikovsky's "The Seasons" for solo piano, and the Glinka trio for piano, clarinet and bassoon. In addition, George and Tsarov will present Robert Schumann's seven-movement song cycle "Dichterliebe" (meaning "Poet's Love"), based on Heinrich Heine's poetry.
SUNY Potsdam's Crane School of Music is the only All-Steinway School in the State University of New York. In 2007, the College completed a historic purchase of 141 pianos, the largest single acquisition in Steinway & Sons' 154-year history, for the second time that Crane has had that distinction (in 1955, Potsdam purchased 125 Steinway grand and upright pianos for the then-new Crane Hall). Crane is grateful to Steinway & Sons for hosting this performance at Steinway Hall.
The event is free and open to all, but reservations are needed, due to limited seating. Please contact Heidi Walker in the Crane office at 267-2812, or e-mail walkerhl@potsdam.edu to inquire about reserving tickets.
