CANTON – Improving soil health on farmland is integral to ensure productive, profitable and sustainable agricultural operations while protecting wildlife, water and air quality, said a press release from St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Cover crops benefit soil health by keeping the soil covered to create a barrier against erosion, adding organic matter, stability and recycling excess nutrients that would otherwise leach out of the soil.
In addition, cover crops such as winter rye or triticale can be harvested as livestock feed further benefitting the farmer.
SLC SWCD is looking for producers in the county interested in planting cover crops. Priority will be given to producers that have not worked with the SLC SWCD in the past to implement cover crops and/or have not planted cover crops in the last three years. Participating in the SWCD Agricultural Environmental Program will be a requirement this year which involves an on-site environmental evaluation and the completion of a Cover Crop Plan.
A reimbursement rate of $47/acre will be issued for up to 50 acres per farm that are selected and plant cover crops according to the plan provided to the landowner.
All land accepted for the program must be planted with row crops (corn, soybeans, vegetables, etc.) both this year and next year (2020 & 2021). Cover crops must be planted by the seeding date provided in the plan to qualify for reimbursement.

If interested, call or email by Aug. 21 to allow time for on-site visits and planning. Due to COVID 19 our office is currently closed to the public without an appointment.
