County Soil and Water Conservation District taking bass, trout, catfish orders

Posted

The St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District is taking orders for Largemouth Bass, Brook Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Catfish.

The fish average about five inches long and cost about $180 per hundred depending on the species. Minimum order is 25 fish. Fathead Minnows, which eat mosquitoes, are also available as feed at a lower cost.

Trout will do best in cold ponds. Rainbow may grow to 20-24 inches and can weigh 2 – 3 pounds. Rainbows are larger, but Brooks are more aggressive.

The Largemouth Bass do well in warmer ponds. They may grow to 18-19” and can weigh 4-5 pounds. A bass requires 8 pounds of food to gain 1 pound of body weight. Catfish, which are a better fish then the common bullhead, can get up to 5-10 pounds and will tolerate a wide range of water temperature.

All make for some great fishing and eating.

Orders are being taken until Sept. 30, with pick-up on Oct. 7. Proceeds benefit conservation projects in the county.
