Congressional candidate endorsements: NRA for Stefanik, Emily’s List for Cobb in North Country contest

In the last few days, some significant endorsements for the Democrat and Republican candidates for the North Country’s 21st Congressional District have been announced.

The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund and the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association announced their endorsement of Republican incumbent Elise Stefanik of Willsboro.

Both groups have given Stefanik and “A” rating, while rating her opponent, Democrat Tedra Cobb of Canton, a rating of “F.”

"I have known Elise since she first ran for Congress," said Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association. "Elise has delivered on her promise to North Country voters to fight to protect the Second Amendment. She is one of New York's strongest defenders of the Second Amendment elected in Congress. She has never wavered on her positions, and took the lead in helping to pass concealed carry reciprocity out of the House of Representatives."

Meanwhile EMILY’s List, which calls itself the nation’s largest resource for women in politics, has endorsed Tedra Cobb for Congress in New York’s 21st Congressional District.

Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, released the following statement:

“Tedra Cobb is a community leader who is prepared to stand up for North Country working families in Congress,” said Stephanie Schriock, president of EMILY’s List, in the endorsement statement.

“She was inspired to run after Republicans, including incumbent Elise Stefanik, voted to cut rural health care and Medicaid funding for opioid addiction. When elected, Tedra plans to fight for quality, affordable health care and work toward bipartisan solutions to address the opioid epidemic. As a small business owner and former elected local official, she also cares deeply about creating a strong local economy and expanding economic opportunity for North Country families, Schriock said.

Stefanik, has “consistently voted for policies that would hurt women and families in the 21st District, she said, “in addition to supporting Republican attempts to take away health care from millions of Americans, Elise has also supported efforts to defund Planned Parenthood and has voted to undermine equal pay protections for women. Tedra is the champion that the people of North Country need fighting for them in Washington – and EMILY’s List is excited to fight for her in the race to flip this seat.”

EMILY’s List has raised over $500 million to support pro-choice Democratic women candidates since its formation in 1985.
