GOUVERNEUR – State Comptroller Thomas Dinapoli traveled to the North Country and discussed ways his office was working to support public interest and organized labor and also administered an oath of office at a labor council meeting.

The Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence Counties Central Trades and Labor Council met recently at Mullin’s Restaurant to conduct business and install newly elected officers for the 2019-2021 term.

Comptroller Dinapoli joined the meeting and discussed state finances and reported on the strength of the $210 Billion New York State Public Pension Plan, to which he is the sole trustee, according to a press release from the St. Lawrence Counties Central Trades and Labor Council. New York is only one of four states in the country where the public pension plan is 90% funded.

Assemblyman Mark Walczyk and St. Lawrence County Treasurer Renee Cole also spoke to the Council and fielded questions relevant to the labor community. Following the business portion of the meeting, Dinapoli swore in the council’s newly elected officers.

Dinapoli told members of the council that the state unemployment average is below 4% and that there have been 1.2 million private sector jobs created in New York during the past decade.

He explained that most of the job growth had taken place in New York City but emphasized that the road for upstate recovery and growth is dependent upon investments in infrastructure including quality transportation systems, roads, bridges, water and sewer, and broadband connectivity.

The following Labor Council officers and their respective union locals were sworn in: Ron McDougall, president; Terry Hogle, 1st vice president; Sam Burns, 2nd vice president; Rick Morris, 3rd vice president; Jason Clark, recording secretary; Mickey Gale, financial secretary; Amy Simmons, sergeant at arms, Brian Hammond, trustee; Sam Carbone, trustee and Al Labaff, trustee.
