OGDENSBURG – A community garden for Ogdensburg citizens will be available this year at Ft. la Presentation, the Ogdensburg Community Garden Group has announced.

The garden will be located close to Route 68 for easy access. A total of 26 raised beds measuring 24’ x 4’ x 8” with a six-foot walkway between beds is planned.

The Ogdensburg Rotary Club is donating an 8’x12’ garden shed to store all garden equipment.

The group received a grant from St. Lawrence Health Initiative for start-up funds to build the 26 raised beds, premium top soil to fill them, rakes, shovels, small hand tools, wheelbarrows and garden carts, hoses, rain barrels for a water catchment system, a compost area and a picnic area.

The area will be fenced-in by a split rail fence which will be in keeping with the period of the Fort. The group will provide all the tools and plot you will need to grow a large variety of vegetables or fruits for your family.

The plots will be awarded via a lottery system. To enter your name, call the Ogdensburg Area Chamber of Commerce at 393-3620 or stop at their office at 1 Bridge Plaza. Drawing will be held April 20, 2012.

You will be required to sign a contract and expected to abide with the established rules and regulations of the Community Garden. Cost is $25.

You will be expected to provide the seeds or plants, do the planting, weeding, watering and harvesting. If you don’t know much about gardening, guidance will be provided.

Organizers say this is a wonderful opportunity for families to work on a project together where they will get lots of fresh air and exercise, grow the freshest, most nutritious vegetables available and to experience a real sense of community.
