MASSENA -- The Northern New York Community Foundation announced a challenge grant to support Massena Meals on Wheels all-day “$tock the Pot” Roadside Collection event, set for Friday, Sept. 25.

The Community Foundation will match all donations made between 7 a.m. and noon, up to $2,500. Massena Meals on Wheels volunteers will take to the streets with collection pots during a “socially distanced” event from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. The roadside collection will be held in front of the Massena Meals on Wheels building, 70 East Hatfield St., across from the Massena Electric Department. Volunteers will be standing in the center of the road taking collections from passers-by from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. They’ll accept spare change, dollars, checks and debit or credit cards.

“Meals on Wheels and its volunteers provide such a critical service to Massena-area residents,” said Rande Richardson, Community Foundation executive director. “We must work together to help ensure the needs are met, especially during a time when the challenges are the greatest.”

The all-day fundraiser is part of the organization’s “Meals on Wheels Day” that aims to build support for the community-based program and help stock critical food supplies that are distributed to the hundreds of people they serve.

The Community Foundation challenge grant is awarded through its COVID-19 Community Support Fund, which was established in the early days of the public health crisis to address essential needs across the region and help food pantries, non-government school-based programs, and others that serve our most vulnerable residents.

Nearly $50,000 has been awarded since March to support 67 organizations across Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties and strengthen critical resources. The fund continues to grow thanks to many generous gifts from individual donors, families, and corporate and community partners.
