CANTON - The Class of 2020 at St. Lawrence University has been waiting more than 14 months to experience the thrill of a commencement ceremony.

This weekend, many graduates will return to Canton to visit their alma mater and enjoy an event-filled weekend, including fireworks on Saturday night.

Commencement will take place Sunday at 10 a.m. in the Newell Field House. Implementing health safety measures, only the graduate and two guests will be allowed at the ceremony.

Sunday’s ceremony will be livestreamed on the SLU commencement website.

“We have agonized for the last year that your final months as a student were so difficult and disappointing. The unthinkable occurred in unimaginable ways. Your resilience and class solidarity are remarkable and lasting,” a June email to 2020 class members stated.

The University will house graduates on campus at no cost and provide regalia at no charge.

A dinner and “Senior Blues Social will be held Friday night. Saturday will begin with brunch, followed by reunion field days, a BBQ dinner, wine and dessert social and fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Clarkson University, SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Canton have also honored their respective 2020 graduating classes.
