POTSDAM — Clarkson University has identified the student who drowned last weekend in the Raquette River as Justin R. Howard of Vermont.

“Clarkson University is deeply saddened to share that Justin R. Howard ‘23, an aerospace engineering student from Greensboro Bend, Vt. passed away this weekend. Justin was a golfer, played basketball and enjoyed spending time with friends. He was looking forward to graduation in December,” the university said in a statement.

“Our condolences go out to Justin’s family, friends, faculty and classmates,” the statement said.

The search for Howard concluded Saturday afternoon when his body was located by divers from New York State Police, Potsdam police said.

Members of the Potsdam Police Department, Potsdam Fire Department, and Potsdam Rescue supported by the St. Lawrence County Emergency Management Team and first responders were engaged in an extensive search for the student who was swimming in the Raquette River and reported missing by friends at 2:06 a.m. on Friday morning.

“During this time of great loss, we are reminded of the importance of community. Losing a fellow student and member of our University family can be very difficult. Several support resources have been provided to help any students, faculty and staff. “Clarkson University expresses its sincerest appreciation for all of the agencies who aided in the search for Justin, including Potsdam Police Department, Potsdam Fire Department, Potsdam Volunteer Rescue Squad, St. Lawrence County Sheriffs, New York State Police, New York State Forest Rangers, Department of Environmental Conservation Police, New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, St. Lawrence County Emergency Services, Canton Fire Department, Massena Fire Department, Parishville Fire Department, Hannawa Falls Fire Department, Hogansburg Akwesasne Fire Department, West Stockholm Fire Department, and Franklin County Emergency Services,” officials said.

“Clarkson also thanks the businesses of Potsdam who supported or donated to first responders, including Stewart’s Shops, Jrecks Subs, and Thai Cuisine,” the statement said.
