Five different Golden Knights scored goals and junior Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) posted 39 saves as the Clarkson University Hockey team gained a hard-earned 5-3 victory on the road over Princeton University in ECAC Hockey action Friday night in New Jersey.
The Golden Knights, who have won four of their last five games, improved their record to 8-5-2 overall and to 3-2-1 in ECAC Hockey.
After falling behind 1-0 midway through the first period, Clarkson built a 4-1 lead over the Tigers late in the second stanza. Princeton (5-5-0, 5-3-0) tallied the next two goals to cut the Green and Gold’s lead to one early in the third. The Knights, however, held off Princeton down the stretch and sealed the victory with an empty-net score with 51 seconds remaining in regulation.
Princeton opened the scoring at 9:41 of the first when Eric Meland tallied with nine seconds left in a man-advantage. Clarkson came right back to tie it 13 seconds later when sophomore Nik Pokulok (Vaudreuil-Dorion, QUE) connected for his second career goal, on a shot from the top of the left circle off assists from freshman Mike Garlasco (Mahwah, NJ) and senior Lauri Tuohimaa (Helsinki, Finland).
Sophomore Adam Pawlick (Utica, NY) sent the Knights into the first-period intermission with a 2-1 lead as he scored on the power play with 21 seconds remaining in the period. Freshman Allan McPherson (Kinburn, ONT) and junior Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) assisted.
Just 48 seconds into the second, Clarkson went on top 3-1 when junior Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) tallied his first goal of the season, finishing off a pass in front from classmate Nick Tremblay (Candiac). Junior Mark Borowiecki (Kanata, ONT) also assisted.
The Knights made it 4-1 at 12:00 when freshman Matt Zarbo (Grand Island, NY) scored his team-high sixth goal of the season, knocking in a rebound during a scramble in front. Morley and McPherson recorded their second assists of the game.
Princeton regained the momentum late in the middle frame as Rob Kleebaum scored on the power play at 19:19. The Tigers connected for their third power-play goal of the game at 6:28 of the third to make it a 4-3 game.
Princeton went on its 10th power play in the final minute of regulation, and pulled its goaltender for a 6-on-4 advantage in a bid to tie the game. Clarkson, however, held off the Tigers and clinched the win when senior Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT) scored into the empty net at 19:09.
Princeton, which went 3-of-10 on the power play, outshot Clarkson 42-27. The Knights finished 1-of-5 with the man-advantage.
