Citizens form group to restore, maintain Canton's Remington Recreational Trail at Partridge Run

CANTON – A group of concerned citizens has formed a committee to restore and maintain the Remington Recreational Trail around the Partridge Run Golf Course.

Maintenance on the trail has been deferred for several years, and the trail surface has developed cracks, heaves and crumbling pavement.

The trail is a valuable asset for people from Canton and surrounding area. It enhances the quality of life for all who walk, run, cycle and skate on it. It is often used for fundraising by groups that organize walks and runs for various causes. It contributes to economic development in the village by adding to the attractiveness of Canton as a place to work and live.

The new group, Friends of the Canton Trail, has secured a commitment from the Canton Village Board to spend $5,000 from contingency funds to begin urgent repairs on the trail in the current fiscal year. Friends of the Canton Trail has also secured a generous $5,000 challenge grant from North Country Savings Bank. The group will seek additional donations from area businesses, non-profit organizations, and individuals to match the challenge. The goal is to raise $10,000 to be added to the village contribution so that one-half mile of the trail can be repaired this year.

The village also voted to establish an annual allotment for trail repair and maintenance sufficient to completely repave the trail over five to six years, and it will reinstate the citizens’ Trail Advisory Committee to help with the effort.

Anyone who cares about the trail and enjoys using it can be involved in efforts to restore and preserve this wonderful recreational asset. Contact Baylor Johnson at bjohnson@stlawu.edu or Judy Chase at jachase1@verizon.net. Checks can be made out to the Village of Canton and in the memo portion of the check write Partridge Trail Fund. Send checks to Friends of the Canton Trail, P.O. Box 651, Canton, New York 13617. Donations are tax deductible.
