Chamber, Reality Check team up to make Potsdam Summerfest smoke free

POTSDAM – Potsdam SummerFest was smoke free for the first time ever this year.

This year the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce and Advancing Tobacco Free Communities of St. Lawrence, Jefferson, and Lewis counties teamed up to create a smoke free environment for the all those attending Summerfest.

For the past 51 year’s Potsdam’s SummerFest has brought local businesses, musicians, artists, and community members together to kick back, relax, and network downtown.

Over the years the community’s youth have made up a big portion of the population attending the event participating in bouncy houses, lawn games, laser tag, and bumper balls.

“Every year SummerFest seems to be growing its youth and infant population and community members over the years have become concerned about them being exposed to secondhand smoke,” according to Joey Boswell of Reality Check. “Throughout the weekend community members stopped by the Advancing Tobacco Free Communities table expressing how much they appreciated the event being smoke free with designated smoking areas close by.”

Boswell said the Seaway Valley Prevention Council’s Advancing Tobacco Free Communities grant would like to let the community know that they are not an anti-smoking group, they simply want to create environments where youth are not exposed to secondhand smoke and tobacco marketing.

“Thank you to the Potsdam Chamber of Commerce for working towards creating a smoke free environment at events where our children attend,” Boswell said.
