CANTON -- The town and village of Canton are planning to purchase an owl camera/microphone system to allow them to continue to broadcast their municipal board meetings to the public.
The town approved an expenditure of $750 at its October board meeting.
The village board discussed the issue briefly at their Oct. 19 meeting and planned to contribute $750 to the purchase after a little more research.
The camera system, now being used by many municipal boards around the region and elsewhere, combines a microphone with a moveable video cam that can record and broadcast from multiple perspectives during municipal board meetings where several people are talking.
The Canton boards like many others began broadcasting their meetings on the Zoom cloud conferencing platform when the state shutdown due to COVID-19 concerns.
Members of the media, local residents and town and village officials have expressed a desire to have the meetings continue to be broadcast to allow more public participation in local government, even if the region opens up more moving forward.
