CANTON -- The Canton Town Council, at its regular meeting April 8 at 6 p.m., is expected to discuss the ongoing negotiation of an agreement between the town and village to staff a constable/peace officer for town court.
The meeting, open to the public, will be held on the cloud conference platform Zoom. Those who want to participate can register at https://bit.ly/2UILXma.
The boards of the two municipalities have been working out the details of the agreement for several months. The village, which has administration over the the Canton Police Department will provide training for the officer for the town which administers Canton Town Court. The village will also be responsible for providing a weapon for the officer under a lease arrangement under consideration as the town is not allowed under municipal law to own a firearm.
The constable/peace officer will be employed by the town.
The village board discussed the agreement at their online meeting on the Zoom platform March 30.
At the meeting April 8, the council is also expected to discuss and take action on the town hiring freeze, hear recommendations from the Complete Streets Task Force, and review the second notice charge for taxes.
During the current state of emergency caused by the pandemic, the town board is planning to hold special meetings online on Zoom twice weekly in April on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. and Fridays at 11 a.m.
After convening these special meetings, the council is expected to meet in executive session to discuss issues “identified as proper by Public Officers Law 105(1)-(f)(h).”
Links to the Zoom sessions for these meetings are not listed on the town webpage. Contact Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley at 315-386-2962 or mashley@cantonny.gov, or Town Clerk Lisa Hammond at 315-386-3735 or townclerk@cantonny.gov for more details on how to attend.
