CANTON – The town board has approved a $3,000 increase to the municipal court budget to offset additional expenses.

The board agreed to the increase at its meeting Wednesday, Sept. 11.

The court recently had a rare jury trial which required an interpreter who had to be brought in from Binghamton. Town Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley said it cost about $1,2o0. Additionally the court recently had to pay back $1,700 on a JCAP grant it received previously.

Town Councilman Jimmy Smith suggested the board approve a $1,500 increase now and if the court required more they could approach the board later for an additional amount.

Town Councilman Phil LaMarche said Town Justice Michael Morgan had budgeted $3,000 as the total amount needed for the remaining year to cover expenses.

In addition to fixed operation costs, the court also has training costs to meet.

After some discussion, the board agreed to the whole $3,000 increase.
