CANTON – Canton town and village officials are discussing charging user fees for the municipal building at 60 Main St.

“The municipal building is used quite a bit for a bunch of different things,” said Supervisor Mary Ann Ashley at a joint meeting of the two boards on March 11.

“And it can be quite disruptive to our departments,” Ashley said.

Attorney’s often use the municipal board room at the building for depositions, and other groups uses spaces there as well

“Its not fun, it’s very disruptive for outside groups to use our building and I feel it that interferes with our departments,” said Ashley.

The supervisor recommended that the town and village start charging use fees and recommended that the municipalities’ shared services committee review the recommendation.

“Well to me there is two issues there that you raise Mary Ann,” said Village Trustee Carol Pynchon. “One is its disrupting and not being available for our use and the other is the extent to which they feel they can ask staff to fix their woes, figure out the internet…(etc.)”

“It can be treated badly,” Ashley said.

The boards agreed to send the matter to the shared services committee for more review.
