CANTON – A resident on the Irish Settlement Road in the Town of Canton is seeking a speed reduction.
Veigh Mehan approached the Canton Town Board on Wednesday, May 11, to voice her concerns about dangerous conditions and to submit a petition signed by 28 of the 32 households on the Irish Settlement Road.
The request is to reduce the speed limit from 55 miles per hour to 45 mph.
“There are a lot of animals, children, bicycles and runners. And there was a fatality on Easter,” she stated.
Mehan also pointed out the back side of the road is a wildlife refuge of the Upper and Lower Lakes.
The town will now forward the request to Donald Chambers, St. Lawrence County Supervisor of Highways, who in turn will send it to the New York State Department of Transportation who will conduct a speed study before making a determination.
