CANTON - Village Superintendent Marty Miller told members of the village board Wednesday night that he has received complaints from residents living near the recently-repaired railroad crossings. One area of concern was Pleasant Street where CSX reportedly damaged sidewalks and created a drainage problem during the repair project.

Work was recently completed on CSX crossing on Pleasant, Harrison, Park, Miner, and Buck Streets.

Miller noted Harrison Street is now open to traffic but it appears work is yet to be done.

“I have no idea what they’re doing on Harrison Street. The railroad does what they want to do,” he said. “The village will not be doing anything until they’re done.”

Mayor Michael Dalton agreed.

“They didn’t take in account how the drainage worked on Pleasant Street and they left a mess on Harrison Street. I’m not sure what we’re going to do,” he said.

Similar work was conducted in Potsdam with CSX crews returning to reconfigure and repave the railroad crossing area on Pine St.

Miller also reported a joint infrastructure committee has been formed to explore shared services or infrastructure with the town.

“It’s more powerful when the village and town are looking at the same thing. It just makes sense,” he said.

One major discussion will revolve around the town’s construction of a new sand and salt storage facility on a parcel located off Stiles Avenue near the town barn. At a joint meeting last month, Councilman James Smith invited the village to invest in the project.

The town has a commitment to acquire leased acreage from All States Asphalt, Inc., Sutherland, Mass. for the proposed storage facility. Michel’s Properties is currently utilizing that property. Michel's is expected to complete its New York Power Authority transmission line work in a year and a half.

The village’s salt and sand storage is currently located adjacent to the village’s Department of Public Works building on Lincoln. By joining the town and relocating, it would open up an area near the Canton Pavilion and Bend in the River Park.
