CANTON — The Canton Police Department, in conjunction with the Canton Recreation Department, hosted a Bike Safety event on Wednesday, July 14 at the Canton Pavilion.
Canton PD Officer Ashley Coffey was assisted with the bike event by St. Lawrence University Safety & Security Officers Brian Zimmer and Kelly Canary, and St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Deputies Patrtick Chapman and Kevin O'Connell provided each attendee with a Child Safe ID card.
Each participant (and parent) learned how to properly fit their bike helmets, learned hand signals, traffic signs and other rules of the road so that they each remain safe while riding, said a press release from the Canton PD.
Various obstacle courses were set up inside of the pavilion and everyone got to try out their riding skills and new knowledge along with the officers, the press release said.
The Canton PD credited Grasse River Outfitters (Main Street, Canton) for donating a reusable water bottle for each participant's bicycle.
A second bike safety event is scheduled for Wednesday, July 28 at the Canton Pavilion from 9-11 a.m.
Anyone interested in attending can register on the Village of Canton's webpage under "Parks & Recreation", and then look for "Summer Programs" on the bottom, right side of the page.
